Introduction

It is a scene every parent knows by heart. You walk into your child’s room to say goodnight, and it feels less like a bedroom and more like a plush toy sanctuary. You might have even experienced that specific 2:00 AM "parenting tax" where you trip over a stray stuffed elephant while trying to soothe a restless sleeper. At Baby Kid Squad, we know that as your child grows, so does their collection of "best friends." While these toys bring immense comfort and joy, they also bring a unique organizational challenge.

One of the most effective and stylish ways to reclaim your floor space is by using netting for stuffed animals. Whether you call them toy hammocks, corner nets, or plushie swings, these simple tools can transform a chaotic room into a curated space where every toy has its place. This isn’t just about cleaning up; it’s about creating a room that functions for your family’s daily life.

In this guide, we are going to walk you through everything you need to know about choosing, installing, and styling netting for stuffed animals. We will cover how to select the right size based on your child's developmental stage, how to ensure the installation is safe and secure, and how to pick a style that complements your home’s aesthetic. At Baby Kid Squad, our philosophy is always to look at the stage first, ensure a real-life fit, perform a safety check, and style with intention. By the time you finish reading, you’ll have a clear plan to get those plushies off the floor and into the air.

Understanding the Stage: When to Start Using Netting

Before you grab a drill and a mesh net, it is important to think about your child’s current developmental stage. A storage solution that works for a toddler might not be the best choice for a school-aged child, and safety priorities shift as kids grow.

The Nursery Stage (Newborn to 12 Months)

At this stage, the netting is primarily for the parents. Your baby isn't "playing" with a massive collection of stuffed animals yet, but you likely received dozens as gifts. In a nursery, netting for stuffed animals serves as a decorative element that keeps the room tidy while keeping toys within your reach but out of the baby’s sleep space. If you're outfitting a nursery, check our Baby Clothing and Baby & Mother collections for coordinating nursery textiles and soft goods to match a curated look: baby clothing collection · baby & mother essentials.

The Toddler Stage (1 to 3 Years)

Toddlers are explorers. They want to touch, pull, and climb. If you install a net at this stage, height is your best friend. You want the net high enough that a curious toddler cannot reach up and hang from it, which could lead to the net tearing or, more importantly, the hardware pulling out of the wall. At this age, you are the "gatekeeper" of the toys in the net, rotating them down for playtime and back up for storage.

The Preschool and Early Elementary Stage (4 to 8 Years)

This is the golden age for stuffed animal netting. Your child likely has a few "must-have" toys they sleep with and a larger collection they enjoy looking at or playing with occasionally. Netting for stuffed animals allows them to see their whole collection at once, which can actually prevent them from dumping out a whole bin just to find one specific toy. At this stage, you might even lower the net slightly so they can learn to help with the "cleanup" process. Need a few coordinating storage or playroom ideas? Browse our Toys & Hobbies collection for small bins, display toys, and plush options that pair well with wall storage: toys & hobbies.

Key Takeaway: Always match the height and accessibility of the netting to your child’s current physical abilities and safety needs.

What to Do Next:

  • Assess the total volume of stuffed animals currently in the room.
  • Observe your child’s current reach and climbing habits.
  • Identify a corner or wall space that is away from the crib or bed.

Choosing the Right Type of Netting

Not all netting for stuffed animals is created equal. The market offers a variety of materials, shapes, and sizes. Choosing the right one depends on how many toys you have and where you plan to put them.

Triangular Corner Hammocks

This is the most common type of netting. It is designed to fit into a 90-degree corner, utilizing space that often goes to waste. These are excellent for large collections because they can stretch quite a bit. Look for "fishing net grade" or heavy-duty polyester mesh if you have a lot of heavy plushies.

Vertical Hanging Nets

If you don't have a spare corner, vertical nets (often called toy chains or tiered organizers) hang from a single hook on the ceiling or over a door. These work well for smaller toys or for rooms with very limited wall space. However, they can be more prone to swinging, so they need to be placed carefully.

Macramé and Decorative Nets

If "style with intention" is your priority, macramé nets offer a beautiful, boho-chic look. These are often made from cotton cord and are sturdier (less stretchy) than traditional mesh. They look great in a curated nursery or a themed bedroom but might hold fewer items than a stretchy polyester net.

Elastic vs. Non-Elastic

Some nets are designed to be "super stretchy," expanding as you add more toys. While this maximizes storage, it also means the net will sag lower over time. Non-elastic nets provide a more consistent look but require you to be more selective about how many toys you pack inside.

Style Tip: If you want a clean, modern look, choose a net that matches your wall color. If you want the netting to be a feature, choose a contrasting color or a natural fiber like cotton macramé.

Real-Life Fit: Installation and Placement

At Baby Kid Squad, we believe a product is only as good as its real-life application. You can buy the most beautiful netting for stuffed animals, but if it falls off the wall after two days, it isn't helping your family.

Finding the Perfect Spot

Think about the flow of the room. You want the net in a place where it won't be bumped into constantly. A corner behind a door (if there is enough clearance) or a corner above a bookshelf is usually a safe bet.

Important: Never hang netting or heavy toys directly over a crib or a toddler’s bed. While the netting itself is lightweight, the combined weight of several stuffed animals can be significant, and hardware can fail.

Installation Basics

Most netting kits come with screw-in hooks and plastic anchors. If you are a renter or aren't comfortable with tools, you might be tempted to use adhesive hooks. However, we generally recommend against adhesive hooks for toy nets. Stuffed animals might be light individually, but twenty of them create a constant "pull" that can easily rip adhesive off the wall, potentially taking the paint with it.

For a secure fit:

  1. Mark your spots: Hold the net up to the wall (it helps to have a second person) and mark where the three points of the triangle will go.
  2. Use anchors: Unless you are screwing directly into a wooden stud, always use the plastic wall anchors provided. This prevents the hooks from pulling out of the drywall.
  3. Tension is key: Don't pull the net too tight during installation. You want a little bit of a "pocket" so the toys don't just roll right out the front.

If you need hardware or a wall-safe mounting solution, check our Shoes & Bags and Baby & Mother sections for sturdy wall hooks and carriers that illustrate reliable mounting methods: shoes & bags collection · baby & mother gear.

What to Do Next:

  • Locate the studs in your walls if possible for the most secure installation.
  • Clear the area below the installation site to ensure nothing is in the way while you work.
  • Double-check that the height is out of reach for infants and toddlers.

The Safety Check: Protecting Your Little Ones

Safety is the foundation of everything we do at Baby Kid Squad. When it comes to netting for stuffed animals, there are a few specific things to keep in mind to keep your home a safe environment.

The Bare Crib Principle

For infants, the standard guidance from pediatric authorities is a "bare crib" principle. This means a firm, flat sleep surface with no loose bedding, pillows, bumpers, or toys. When installing netting in a nursery, ensure it is far enough away that a baby cannot reach it from their crib, and that no toys could accidentally fall into the crib.

If you have questions about product safety or returns after buying storage solutions or large plush items, our Shipping & Return page explains timelines and return policies: Shipping & Return.

Choking and Small Parts

Netting is designed to hold toys, but it shouldn't be used for toys with very small parts or heavy, hard objects. If a stuffed animal has loose buttons or accessories, the mesh of the net could potentially snag them. Always follow the age recommendations on toy packaging, especially for children under three.

Entanglement Hazards

Any type of mesh or netting carries a risk of entanglement if it is within reach of a child. This is why height is so important. If the net sags too low as you fill it, it's time to either remove some toys or move the hooks higher.

Weight Limits

While most plushies are light, some "weighted" stuffed animals (used for sensory support) can be quite heavy. Do not overload a net beyond the manufacturer’s suggestions, as this puts stress on the wall anchors.

When to Ask a Professional: If you have concerns about your child's sleep environment or safety, always consult your pediatrician. For specific questions about secure wall mounting in different home types (like plaster vs. drywall), a local hardware specialist or a professional handyman can offer the best advice. If you need direct help from our team about a product or order, visit our Contact page: Contact Us.

Fit, Sizing, and Material Considerations

Understanding the mechanics of the netting will help you choose a product that lasts through several "room refreshes."

Sizing and Capacity

Netting is usually measured by the length of its sides. A common size is roughly 50 to 70 inches across the front.

  • Small Nets: Great for a handful of special dolls or small "bean-bag" style plushies.
  • Jumbo/XL Nets: Necessary for those oversized bears or the massive "squishy" pillows that are currently popular.

Keep in mind that height and weight matter more than the "age range" listed on a storage product. A "jumbo" net full of large toys will hang much lower than the same net with just a few small items.

If you’re also shopping for coordinating storage or replacement plush toys, our Toys & Hobbies category has a wide selection of stuffed animals and soft toys that work well with wall storage: stuffed toys & plush.

Fabric and Care

Most netting for stuffed animals is made from polyester or nylon mesh. These materials are chosen because they are durable and resistant to mold or mildew.

  • Washability: Over time, the net and the toys will collect dust. Look for a net that is machine-washable (usually on a delicate cycle in a mesh laundry bag).
  • Breathability: Mesh is naturally breathable, which is great for the toys, but you should still periodically take the toys down to give them a quick shake or vacuum to keep allergens at bay.

Individual Variation

Every child’s collection is different. If your child has fifty tiny figurines and three giant bears, a single corner net might not be the answer. You might need a combination of a net for the large items and a bin or shelf for the smaller ones. For bins, carriers, or activity gear options, browse our Activity & Gear and Baby & Mother sections: activity & gear.

Practical Scenarios: Finding Your Real-Life Fit

How do you choose the right approach for your specific home? Here are a few common scenarios we see.

Scenario 1: The "Small Room" Struggle

If your child’s room is tiny, floor space is at a premium. In this case, netting for stuffed animals is a lifesaver. By using the "vertical real estate" of the room, you can keep the floor clear for a play rug or a desk. For small rooms, a white or light-colored net helps keep the space feeling open and airy.

Scenario 2: The Sibling Shared Space

When two kids share a room, toys can quickly become a source of conflict. Using two separate nets in opposite corners can help define "ownership" and give each child a designated place for their favorite friends. Consider pairing nets with separate labeled storage from our Boys Clothing or Girls Clothing collections if you want each child to have a matching storage aesthetic: boys clothing · girls clothing.

Scenario 3: The "Rotating" Toy System

Many parents find that kids play better when they have fewer choices. You can use a high-mounted net as "long-term storage" for toys that aren't in the current rotation. Every few weeks, you can swap a few toys from the net with the ones in the active play bin. This makes "old" toys feel new again!

Scenario 4: The Grandparent’s House

If you are a grandparent or frequent host, you might not want a permanent toy box in your guest room. A toy net is a great solution because it can be taken down easily when the kids aren't visiting, or it can be tucked into a corner without taking up any walking space.

Action List for Success:

  • Choose a "Jumbo" size if you have more than 15 medium-sized plushies.
  • Mount the net at least 5 feet high for toddlers.
  • Check the tension of the hooks every few months to ensure they aren't loosening.
  • Do not hang the net in a high-traffic walkway.

Style with Intention: Making Organization Look Good

Organization doesn't have to look clinical or boring. At Baby Kid Squad, we love pieces that add to the "vibe" of a room.

Color Coordination

You can find netting in almost any color.

  • Monochrome: Use a grey or black net for a modern, sleek look.
  • Playful: Use a bright pink, blue, or yellow net to match the primary colors of a playroom.
  • Natural: Use a cream-colored macramé net for a soft, boho nursery.

Lighting the Way

Some parents like to wrap a string of battery-operated LED fairy lights around the edge of the net. This can act as a soft nightlight and makes the "stuffed animal cloud" look magical at bedtime. (Safety note: Always ensure the lights are securely attached and that the battery pack is out of reach of children. Use lights that do not get hot to the touch.)

Curating the Collection

Think of the net as a display case. Instead of just stuffing everything in haphazardly, place the largest items in the back and the smallest, most colorful ones in the front. This turns the storage solution into a piece of wall art. If you’re looking to add a few new plushies to curate that display, explore our plush and stuffed toy selection in Toys & Hobbies: plush stuffed toys.

Reassess and Refine: The Growing Child

As we always say, kids change fast. Your organizational needs will change right along with them. Every six months or so, it’s a good idea to "reassess and refine" your stuffed animal situation.

  1. The "Love" Test: Ask your child which toys they still love. If a toy hasn't been touched in months and has no sentimental value, it might be time to donate it.
  2. The "Safety" Recheck: Is the net sagging? Are the hooks still tight? As your child gets taller, do you need to move the net up?
  3. The Clean-Up: Take everything down, wash the net, and dust off the plushies. This is a great time to check for any loose seams or eyes on the toys that might need a quick repair.

If you find damaged items or need returns after a purchase, our product pages include Shipping & Return details — and you can always contact us for help: Shipping & Return · Contact Us.

Conclusion

Netting for stuffed animals is more than just a piece of mesh; it’s a tool that helps you manage the beautiful chaos of childhood. By choosing the right style, focusing on a secure installation, and prioritizing safety, you can create a room that is both organized and enchanting.

Summary of Key Takeaways:

  • Stage First: Match the height and accessibility to your child's physical stage.
  • Real-Life Fit: Use wall anchors for a secure, long-term installation that won't damage your walls.

FAQ

How many stuffed animals can a standard net hold?

The capacity depends entirely on the size of the net and the size of the toys. A standard "large" net (about 60 inches across) can typically hold 20 to 30 medium-sized stuffed animals. If you have jumbo-sized plushies or "Squishmallow" style pillows, you may only be able to fit 5 to 10. Always look for "jumbo" or "XL" versions if you have a significant collection, and be careful not to exceed the weight limit of your wall anchors.

If you want to shop for larger storage or extra plush options, check our Toys & Hobbies category: shop toys & hobbies.

Can I install netting for stuffed animals without drilling into the wall?

While some people try to use adhesive hooks, we generally do not recommend them for this purpose. The constant downward pull of the toys, combined with the weight, often causes adhesive hooks to fail, which can damage your paint or drywall. For a safe and secure "real-life fit," it is best to use the screw-in hooks and plastic anchors provided in most kits. If you are a renter, the small holes left by the hooks are usually very easy to patch with a bit of spackle when you move out.

At what age is it safe to have a toy hammock in a child's room?

Netting for stuffed animals can be used at any age, provided it is installed correctly. For infants (0-12 months), the net must be high enough that there is no risk of toys falling into the crib and far enough away that the baby cannot reach it. For toddlers (1-3 years), the net should be mounted high out of reach to prevent them from trying to pull it down or use it as a climbing aid. As kids reach school age (4+), you can lower the net to a height where they can help put toys away, as long as they understand it is not for hanging or playing with.

How do I clean the netting and the toys inside?

Stuffed animals and mesh nets are notorious for collecting dust. Every few months, we recommend taking all the toys down. Most polyester nets can be placed in a mesh laundry bag and washed on a gentle, cold cycle, then air-dried. For the stuffed animals, check their individual care labels; many can be spot-cleaned or vacuumed with a brush attachment. This "reassess and refine" step is also the perfect time to decide which toys your child has outgrown.
